ABOUT PROJECT

FlotMethanol – is a Russian company implementing an innovative project for the installation of methanol-production plants on a floating base; which are designed to process natural gas into methanol for storage, shipment or the refueling of ships.

The fully autonomous floating plants aim to efficiently process natural gas from unique northern hydrocarbon reserves into an easily transported product – methanol. This is required both for the Russian gas industry, whose work is concentrated in hard-to-reach and remote areas, and for chemical industries in countries of the Asia-Pacific Region (APR). The project will enhance the logistical capacity of Russian companies and increase the load of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) by 10 million tons per year.

Research and laboratory tests have proven that the use of Russian technology and equipment will ensure the economic profitability of the project and additionally reduce sanction risks.

The mobility of the FlotMethanol floating plants, as well as their location near offshore and offshore fields, will allow the resulting high-purity methanol (GOST 2222-95) to be used as marine fuel and to refuel passing ships directly from the floating platform. This meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in reducing the sulfur content in marine fuel and allows shipowners to make optimal environmental decisions.

The technical and engineering solutions adopted during the development of the methanol production process minimize the harmful effects on the environment, including the emission of gases into the atmosphere and waste-water into water bodies; thus ensuring high standards of industrial safety, and the maintenance of a favorable natural environment in the region where the floating plants operate.

 

Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, is a chemical with the formula CH3OH (a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group, often abbreviated MeOH). Methanol is primarily converted to formaldehyde, which is widely used in many areas, especially polymers. Acetic (Propanoic) acid can be produced from methanol.

Condensation of methanol to produce hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds is the basis of several technologies related to the conversion of gases to liquids and vice-versa. These include methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH), methanol to gasoline (MTG), and methanol to olefins (MTO), and methanol to propylene (MTP). Methanol fuel is an alternative biofuel for internal combustion and other engines, either in combination with gasoline or independently.

The project brings together a high level of Russian experience, knowledge and competence in the fields of chemical engineering, compression and pumping equipment, microprocessor technologies, catalysts and associated technologies from engineering companies and scientific associations. 

Focussed on safety, ease of use and maintenance under extreme climatic conditions, FlotMethanol only uses equipment that has the necessary industrial safety certificates and authorisation for use from Russian state supervisory and monitoring bodies.

Specific characteristics of the production of methanol from natural gas and the presence of volatiles in its content were studied during the design phase and the necessary tests, certification and patenting of the innovative solutions deployed on the floating platform were made.

In order to determine the efficiency of Russian catalysts in methanol synthesis, laboratory tests were undertaken on the catalyst NIAP-06-06 (K-SO) (NIAP-KATALISATOR) on an industrial demonstration platform. This showed high activity and selectivity on a par with foreign equivalents (CO conversion on one pass with the NIAP catalyst produced 55-60% efficiency, and the methanol concentration in the crude methanol was around 88-92%).

 

 

Ecology

Governed by the highest environmental protection standards along with a keen understanding of its responsibilities to make the best use of natural resources, FlotMethanol aims to minimise the environmental impact of its production processes.

No solid waste is produced during the production process. The replacement of depleted catalysts shall be carried out in accordance with the attached table and then sent for reprocessing.

The technical requirements stipulate the near-complete use of gaseous effluents and the periodical production discharge - blow-off and tank gases - is used as a fuel to heat the methane conversion pipe heaters. The converted gas and gas condensate created during the cooling process is recycled back to the steam production process.
